We’re sure you would agree that a well-trimmed and maintained Hedge is a wonderful site to see. It really makes a home look a lot more inviting and tidier. Even though we mainly provide Tree Surgery services, we also offer Hedge Trimming/Removals. A full list of our services can be found at our services page.
When should I have my hedges cut?
Let’s take Yew for example – August/September is the best time to trim this type of hedge. This type of hedge should be trimmed at the very least once a year.
Leyland Cypress – This type of hedge is extremely fast growing and needs trimming at least three times a year. Best times to get this done is April, July and then August.
Laurel Hedges – As with other hedges around July and August time is the best time to get this hedge trimmed.
As Atkinson ARB are so popular around the Lincolnshire area, now is the best time to contact the team to book an appointment to get your hedges trimmed. We are experts in Tree Surgery and all things Arboriculture.
In fact, just recently, we have just been awarded a Top 3 Award for Tree Surgeons in Lincolnshire for our outstanding quality of service and price. Here’s some more information on our Facebook page. Make sure to give us a like when you visit.
If there is anything else that you require, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Disease & Pests
Even though it’s impossible to guarantee that your trees will never suffer with disease and pests, there are some things that can be done to prevent it and protect your trees going forward.
What are some of the diseases?
Here are just a few examples of diseases that trees can suffer from. Making sure you hire a fully qualified arborist will certainly help.
Ash dieback – This disease affects Ash trees and is caused by a fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. It usually causes leaf loss and bark lesions. Ash trees have different variants, typically an Ash tree would start to flush between April & May. However, if your Ash tree doesn’t flush at this time, it doesn’t mean that your tree is suffering. However, if your Ash tree still isn’t in full leaf, you may have a problem.
Honey Fungus – Also known as Armillaria mellea, this group of fungi attack the roots of the tree. Signs include tips of the branches falling away, cracking/bleeding bark and poor foliage.
Dutch Elm Disease – This disease starts to occur in early summer and you may notice some of the leaves turning yellow and wilting. Dutch Elm Disease affects all major elm species. It has killed approximately 60 million elms from two major epidemics.
Making sure that trees stay healthy and well maintained is our pride and passion. As Tree Surgeons & Arborists, we can certainly help you when it comes to caring for your trees.
Are you concerned about the health of your trees? If so, please feel free to contact us. We are experts when it comes to anything related with Tree Surgery and Arboriculture. Contact our friendly team who will be happy to help.
We cover most of these areas and surrounding;
Woodhall Spa, Horncastle, Tattershall, Stixwould, Benniworth, Market Rasen, Boston, Lincoln and Louth.
Bird & Bat Boxes
Here is an example of a bat box (first image) and bird box (second) installation on a commercial site.
We were asked to tender for the installation of 5 bird boxes and 5 bat boxes on a development site in Chesterfield which we won. This site had a number of very sensitive trees in close proximity to the new dwellings.
As part of the planning restrictions a number of trees had to be left in good health with a number of bird and bat boxes installed in the correct areas as both were present on the land prior to the development.
We also were able to carry out a crown lift and removal of dangerous dead wood on a number of trees in accordance with the local councils directions. Both the client and council were extremely happy with the results.
Why have a bird or bat box?
Unfortunately, there are a lot of pressures on our native wildlife. New build houses for example are often unsuitable or impossible for birds and bats to nest/roost, which means that opportunities are reducing for many species.
If we were to look at this from a human perspective, it is the equivalent of a housing shortage where the demand is much higher than what’s being supplied. By doing something as simple as using Atkinson ARB to install a bird/bat box, you will be providing invaluable support to local wildlife.
Other services we provide are Tree removals, Hedge Cutting, Tree Pruning and more. In fact, have a look at our services page for a full list of what services Atkinson ARB can provide for you.
We really do look forward to hearing from you so feel free to contact us should you require anything else.
TPO Form Submission
A tree preservation order (or TPO for short) is a request made to your local council to protect specific trees or a group of trees from deliberate damage and harm.
When we submit a TPO form, this will protect the tree or trees from the following;
Or anything that can damage or destroy the tree(s) without the permission of the local planning authority.
As qualified arborists and tree surgeons, Atkinson ARB fully understand how to request and submit all relevant TPO submission forms.
We submit a TPO form to work on trees that the council have chosen to be of particular importance to the area. It is an offence to work on these individual & important trees without submitting a TPO form explaining what we would like to do to the tree and why the work needs to take place.
This is to stop either the home owner or tree sugery company unecessarily damaging or even removing important trees. We also submit a form to work on trees in a conservation area.
If you live in a conservation area such as the Lincolnshire Wolds and would like work doing to your trees, the same principle applies - a TPO form will need submitting.
If you have ever wondered what an Arborist does in more detail, please feel free to read our previous post.

What is an Arborist?
An arborist can be defined as "a specialist in the cultivation and care of trees and shrubs, including tree surgery, the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of tree diseases, and the control of pests".
When it comes to the care of your trees, you want to make sure that you have a fully qualified arborist. Unfortunately, there are companies out there who advertise themselves as tree surgeons or arborists but are not qualified.
However, when it comes to Atkinson ARB, rest assured that we are NPTC qualified and hold national diplomas in forestry and arboriculture.
As the definition of an arborist states, this is very specialist work so make sure you hire the right people.
We look forward to hearing from you soon so please feel free to contact us should you require anything.
If you haven’t done so already, have a look at some of the services we provide.
We are experts when it comes to Tree Reduction. But why would your trees need reducing?
There are many reasons why trees might need reducing/pruning. These reasons could include;
Improving the structure of the tree
To remove dangerous or defective branches
The reduction of shading
The reduction of wind loading
To provide clearance between the tree and a structure
Care must be taken however, as removing larger branches can lead to disease entering the tree via the wound/s left behind or reduce the vitality of the tree due to the excessive volume of leaf bearing material being removed.
Before any tree reduction is arranged, there are some questions you may need to consider?
What will be the result of removing the branches?
Will it leave a large wound?
Will it remove a large area of leaf bearing material?
Will it leave the tree open to an increased risk of disease?
If the questions above can be answered with a “No” then the reducing of the tree can proceed.
It is very important to realise however, that the reducing of tree branches can be a dangerous process and the safest option, particularly if the branch cannot be reached from the ground, is to employ a suitable trained and insured arborist.
Atkinson ARB are suitable and trained arborists and we are really looking forward to hearing from you. Please contact us for a free & friendly quote.
Don't forget to have a look at our other blog posts.
